The UK’s tech sector is now home to more than 70 tech unicorns. In the past 18 months, 13 UK companies have reached valuations of more than $1 billion, taking the total number of UK firms valued at that amount to 72. More than a third of Europe’s fastest-growing tech companies are now based in Britain. London remains the acknowledged centre of Europe’s tech sector, producing one in five (21%) of the continent’s fast-growing unicorns. The capital has produced 45 unicorns worth $148 billion.

The UK is one of the largest games markets in the world with the total market growing 10 percent to £5.7bn in 2018. Games software accounted for £4bn of this, according to figures published by Ukie. The Entertainment Retailers’ Association estimates that the value of digital and physical video games sales was £3.86bn in 2018.

Among the UK’s creative screen-based industries, video games delivered the highest rate of labour productivity in 2016 at £83,800 a year. UK higher education is also a strong supporter of the games industry. Sixty universities, or colleges provided 215 undergraduate and 40 master video game courses throughout the UK in 2014.
